Isabelita O. Reyes is the returning facilitator for this workshop. She is an associate professor at the Department of Comparative Literature in UP Diliman, where she obtained her undergraduate, masteral, and doctoral degrees in Creative Writing.

Issy worked as an editor for publications such as LegManila and the Philippines Free Press. She is a published author of two poetry collections: In Transitives and Stories from the City. Moreover, she was the editor of the University of the Philippines centennial coffee table book: Our University After a Hundred Years. She is also a freelance writer, editor, and regular instructor at FHL.

YA WRITE! (Young Adults Write!): A Creative Writing Workshop for Teens

July 28, August 4, 11, and 18, 2012

Organized especially for teenagers who are enjoying their summer vacation from July to August, this workshop will introduce participants to the basics of writing fiction and creative nonfiction through a series of lectures, writing exercises, and group sharing.

Aspiring teen writers will learn about the elements that make good writing, and how to apply these in their own stories.

Experienced writer and writing professor Sandra Nicole Roldan will be the returning facilitator for this workshop. Sandra graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Studies from the University of the Philippines Diliman in 1998. In 2010, she earned her Masters degree in Creative Writing from the same university.

Now, she is an assistant professor at UP Diliman’s College of Arts and Letters, and is a member of the university’s Department of English and Comparative Literature. She previously worked for the Ateneo de Manila University’s English Department. Aside from teaching, Sandra also works as a freelance writer and writing trainer.

Writing Fiction

Do you dream of publishing your very own short story or novel?

Take the first step towards becoming a published author by joining the Filipinas Heritage Library’s Writing Fiction workshop. This workshop is dividend into three sessions, focusing on various aspects of the fiction writing process:

Session 1: Where Are You?

Known as the lesser angel of fiction, setting in place and time is one of the most neglected elements of story writing. Characters and events are important, but they must be situated within a context or milieu to become truly persuasive and multi-dimensional.

Session 2: Who Are You?

Character, voice, and vision are three distinguishing elements of fiction. Who the story is about, the manner in which the story is told, and what the story says about the world, are what separate stories that work from those that fall flat.

Session 3: What Do You Have?

Completing a first draft is just the beginning of the writing process. From big picture concerns such as the story’s dramatic arc, pacing, and scene dynamics, to finer points including story characterization, language, and psychology, there are many ways to pursue your story’s development.

Relevant readings and exercises will be given by the workshop facilitator to reinforce lessons learned during each session.

Workshop Facilitator

Tim Tomlinson, co-founder of the New York Writers Workshop and co-author of The Portable MFA in Creative Writing, is the returning facilitator for this workshop. He has been facilitating writing workshops since 1991, in countries such as the United States, United Kingdom, Italy, Thailand, Singapore, and China.

Tim holds a Masters in Fine Arts degree in Fiction from Columbia University’s School of the Arts. His poetry and fiction have appeared in publications such as The Missouri Review, The Gettysburg Review, and The North American Review.

Book Editorial Design

There is more to book design than just creating good covers. Book design involves keeping the reader engaged from cover to cover.  

The Filipinas Heritage Library invites aspiring book designers to a workshop on Book Editorial Design. This workshop will introduce participants to the two fundamental approaches of effective book design.

The aesthetic approach will focus on design elements concerning the book’s physical aspects such as color, composition, and typography. Meanwhile, the strategic approach will center on design information management.

Éclairs (the French word for “lightning”) are exercises that will be given throughout the workshop. These will serve as building blocks towards the completion of result-oriented designs.

Book designer Ige Ramos is the facilitator for this workshop. He is the Principal Designer of his own studio, which handles the editorial design and production of the Rustan’s Supermarket sansRival Magalogue, which has won two Anvil Awards for Excellence in External Publications.

Ige graduated from the University of Santo Tomas College of Architecture and Fine Arts. He also completed the Asian Institute of Management’s Managing the Arts Program. He won two consecutive National Book Awards for Best Design in 2005 and 2006 for A Pilgrim’s Diary and The Governor-General’s Kitchen.

Pamana: A Seminar on Heritage Conservation

One of the most visible forms of heritage is built heritage. It is part of the environment we work in and the country we live in. It is both everyday and ancient. It holds so much value, yet it is mostly overlooked by today’s society.

Without conservation efforts, our historical buildings and monuments will soon crumble into ruin. Thus, the Filipinas Heritage Library and the Heritage Conservation Society (HCS) invite you to join Pamana: a one-day seminar on built heritage conservation.

This seminar will host discussions on what built heritage is, how heritage conservation is done worldwide, and the heritage conservation challenges we face in this modern age.

Cultural experts including Architect Manuel Noche of the HCS; Architect Toti Villalon of architectural design and conservation firm AVillalon Architects; and cultural blogger and tour guide Ivan Henares, will speak during the seminar.

Pamana will be held at FHL, the Makati Central Business District’s only remaining historical site constructed before World War Two. 

The seminar fee is P1,000 inclusive of seminar kit, handouts, snacks, and a certificate of attendance. Lunch will not be served at the venue, but we encourage you to dine at one of the many Ayala Triangle restaurants. Students and senior citizens can avail of a 20-percent discount.

Discover how to handle writer’s block, and how to find your inspiration and sensitivity for writing. Learn how to develop a writing discipline that will take you from a first draft to a published piece. Let Filipina poet and two-time Palanca Award-winner Conchitina Cruz welcome you to the world of Basic Creative Writing.

Cruz won the Palanca Award for her poetry collections Second Skin (1996) and The Shortest Distance (2001). In 2006, her book Dark Hours won the National Book Award for Poetry. Her most recent book is elsewhere held and lingered, published by High Chair in 2008.

Cruz teaches creative writing and literature at the University of the Philippines in Diliman, where she received her undergraduate degree in creative writing, magna cum laude. She received her master of fine arts degree in writing from the University of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She is currently working on her PhD in English at State University of New York-Albany.

The Art of Book Making for Kids

For ages 7 to 12 years old

Treat your kids to a novel experience this summer. Let their imaginations run free and their artistry overflow as create their very own book, from cover to cover. This Book-Making Workshop will teach kids how to bring their ideas and creativity to life on print, and come out with a hand-crafted book. A guest writer will also visit to give tips on making simple stories.

The facilitator for this workshop is Liza Flores. A professional illustrator of children’s literature, her works can be seen in books such as Nagsasabi na si Patpat (1995), A Spider Story (2004), The Gift (2007), and The Secret in the Soil (2010). The children’s book Chenelyn! Chenelyn! (1999), written by Rhandee Garlitos and illustrated by Liza, won the 2000 Gintong Aklat Book Award for Best Children’s Book. 

Liza is a member of Ang Ilustrador ng Kabataan (Ang INK), the country’s first and only organization of illustrators for children. She is also the co-founder of Studio Dialogo, a design company that specializes in identity, web, and graphic design.

A children’s book writer will also assist Liza for the duration of the workshop.

Cultural Work 101

What role does the cultural worker play in today’s global society?

Through Cultural Work 101, the Filipinas Heritage Library provides cultural workers the opportunity to enrich their understanding of the depth, scope, and value of their profession—how it relates to various disciplines, as well as how it contributes to the discourse on culture, history, and identity. The course hopes to equip participants with the knowledge on how cultural work translates to civic action toward the sustainable development of individuals and of society, through class lectures, personal reflections, group discussions, and other learning tools and methods.

Felice Sta. Maria, the facilitator for this seminar, is an award-winning cultural essayist and advocate. In 2001, she was the first recipient of the Dangal ng Haraya for cultural management, a lifetime achievement award from the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA). She is actively involved in various causes, often using her writing to champion these advocacies. Her writings are centered on a personal philosophy for social transformation.

The workshop fee is P2,000 inclusive of a book, workshop materials, meals, and a certificate. A nonrefundable down payment of P500 is required to reserve a slot.
